"Bandit Café" is a pet-friendly coffee concept that stands out from traditional cafés by embracing a cheeky, playful personality while maintaining a sense of sophistication. The goal was to create a welcoming brand for both coffee lovers and their furry companions.
Challenge
In Perth, truly pet-friendly cafés are few and far between, and those that exist often lack a clear identity or memorable design. They wanted to stand out from traditional cafés by introducing a character-driven identity and visual language that would appeal to young professionals, pet lovers, and design-conscious coffee drinkers.
Another challenge was the restriction of a minimalist colour palette, chosen to reflect elegance with a cheeky tone. This meant that the brand needed to communicate warmth, joy, and uniqueness through typography, illustration, and tone of voice, rather than relying on vibrant colours.
Solution
To bring Bandit Café to life, I built a visual identity rooted in contrast, balancing cheeky character with quiet sophistication. The first step was defining a brand mascot that could carry this personality. Inspired by the owner's Dalmatian and the comic-style charm of the name “Bandit,” I created a set of custom illustrations that added a lighthearted, emotional layer to the brand. These illustrations became key to the visual language, offering both character and coherence without relying on bold colours.
